  Hurricane Watch is issued by the Beaufort County Emergency Operations Center when there is a threat of a hurricane within 24-36 hours. Actions for protection of property and life should begin immediately.  
  Hurricane Warning is issued when a hurricane is expected in a specific coastal area in 24 hours of less.
 
  Categories of Hurricanes:  
  Category 1: Winds 74-95 mph. 4’-5’ surge. Minimal Damage  
  Category 2: Winds of 96-110 mph. 6’-8’ surge. Moderate Damage  
  Category 3: Winds 111-130 mph. 9’-12’ surge. Extensive damage  
  Category 4: Winds 131- 155 mph. 13’-18’ surge. Extreme damage  
  Category 5: Winds greater than 155 mph. 18’+ surge. Catastrophic damage
